Benninghoff Chairs Cancer Caucus Meeting With Regional Institutes
HARRISBURG – As the fountain outside the state Capitol today turned pink in honor of breast cancer awareness month, state Rep. Kerry Benninghoff (R-Centre/Mifflin) hosted inside the building a meeting of the bipartisan Pennsylvania House Cancer Caucus, where legislators heard from doctors and providers from regional cancer centers about advances in fighting different forms of the deadly disease.

“Most Pennsylvanians know someone personally or have heard of someone who has been diagnosed with or treated for cancer,” said Benninghoff, whose 4-year-old daughter, Ryleigh, passed away on Dec. 31, 2010, after succumbing to brain cancer.  “Our goal is to raise awareness about this issue and learn about the cutting-edge ways doctors, researchers and other professionals are fighting the disease in the Commonwealth.  In addition, lawmakers learned how money distributed by the Commonwealth as part of the tobacco settlement are providing real, life-saving dividends in advancing treatment and care.”

Laura Toole, director of community and patient services at Northeast Regional Cancer Center, talked to legislators about the Community Based Cancer Patient Navigation Program, which focuses on serving low-income residents and providing them with access to cancer-related health care services.

Nancy Davidson, M.D., associate vice chancellor for cancer research at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, provided legislators with an update about advances in the treatment of melanoma.

Chi Dang, M.D., director of the Abramson Cancer Center at the University of Pennsylvania, talked about treatments for specialized forms of leukemia.

“Some of the work that is going on right here in Pennsylvania truly inspires hope for the future,” Benninghoff said.  “We are blessed to have some very talented doctors and other medical professionals here working to identify ways to treat cancer.”
