Benninghoff Announces Local Cultural and Historical Grants
HARRISBURG – The Centre County Historical Society and Mifflin County Historical Society have each been awarded a $4,000 grant by the state’s Cultural and Historical Grant Program, Rep. Kerry Benninghoff (R-Centre/Mifflin) announced today.
“The preservation of our region’s history and culture is invaluable,” Benninghoff said. “Congratulations to the both of these outstanding organizations, and thank you for all that you do to ensure our great heritage lives on for generations.”
The Cultural and Historical Support Grant Program, run by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC), is awarding nearly $2 million in grants to qualified museums and official county historical societies. The one-year grant program is distributing funds designated by the state Legislature to support the preservation of Pennsylvania’s history.
To be eligible, museums must be located in Pennsylvania and have annual operating budgets exceeding $100,000 and at least one full-time professional staff person. Historical societies must be designated as a county’s official historical society.
Founded in 1904, the Centre County Historical Society is a community and volunteer based non-profit educational organization that works collaboratively with local, regional, county and state organizations in helping to preserve and promote the area’s historic, cultural, and natural resources.
The Mifflin County Historical Society, founded in 1921, exists to record and preserve the county’s history and so that coming generations will cherish and protect this heritage. The society operates primarily through the support of member volunteers.
