HARRISBURG – Rep. Kerry Benninghoff (R-Centre/Mifflin) today announced that $615,000 in School Safety and Security Grants have been awarded to school districts in the 171st Legislative District.
“Providing for the safety and security of our children should be of utmost priority,” Benninghoff said. “I am pleased that tax dollars are being returned to our area to help our local schools ensure the safety of our kids and our educators.”
School districts receiving funding include:
• Bellefonte Area School District; $40,000.
• Penns Valley Area School District; $35,000.
• State College Area School District; $45,000.
• Mifflin County School District; $495,000.
Benninghoff voted to allocate $52.5 million to the School Safety and Security Grant program as a part of the 2019-20 state budget. That funding was awarded today by the School Safety and Security Committee to school districts across the state.
The funding was made available to every school district across Pennsylvania to be used toward security measures they deem most critical. The 17-member committee within the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency was created as part of Act 44 of 2018
, a comprehensive school safety law.
Prior to this latest round of school safety funding, Benninghoff voted in support of an additional $60 million for the School Safety and Security Grant Program, of which every school district that applied received a minimum of $25,000 for safety improvements. Every school district in the 171st received funding in the program’s initial round. In a separate competitive round of grant funding, Mifflin County School District was also previously awarded an additional $530,550 and Central Pennsylvania Institute of Science and Technology (CPI) was awarded an additional $38,590.
“Our schools should be able to focus on education,” Benninghoff said. “As a father of five, school safety is something I care about immensely.”
